Guimarães is a small city in the northern region with around 52,000 inhabitants in its urban center, where we can admire a fascinating "medieval" complex that maintains the structure and architectural features of the Middle Ages. The historic center of the city is distinguished as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2001), as result of an exemplary recovery work that began in the 1980s, and which carries to this day an admirable sense of unity and preservation of people and territory. There are several must-visit/must see monuments, however, just wandering through the narrow streets and small squares, as well as contemplating the beautiful facades laden with history, takes us back to the past without the need for a time machine. The 10th-century Castle or the 15th-century Palace will impress both adults and younger visitors, as well as some of the 11 churches within the walled perimeter will make you stop and reflect on such grandeur! It is true that we have a strong religious character, but also a remarkable defensive orientation evidenced by a 3km long wall and several watchtowers.
Also in terms of culture, the city stands out with abundant programming in the various artistic areas. The creative way found involves revitalizing Bairro C / Zona de Couros - which previously housed tanning workers, peasants and the most disadvantaged - and today hosts university campus, work and research centres, artistic residencies... This area of the city greatly contributed to the choice as European Capital of Culture (2012).
Strongly linked to the first events that led to the founding of Portugal, it has the connotation of "the cradle of the nation" for all Portuguese people. In fact, here was born the one who would become the first and most notable portuguese king -Afonso Henriques (gov. 1143-1185)- and here the battle for independence against the supremacy of the kingdom of León and Castile took place (Batalha de S. Mamede - 1128). Guimarães forms in itself a unique historical and cultural legacy in our country, making it one of the most visited nationally.
The second part of the visit will take us to the highest point at around 40 km, where you will have contact with nature and a fantastic view over the city of Guimarães. The Penha Park rises to about 600mts and comprises a green area of 60ha. It is a sacred site topped by a sanctuary and various religious references, as well as an archaeological study area with traces of occupation dating back to the 1st century BC.
