Braga has roots in the ancient Roman Empire, with a two-millenary history that began in Ancient Rome, when it was founded in 16 BC. as Bracara Augusta in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus. Its importance and legacy are clearly present in remains in the center and surroundings. The city has ruins of hot springs, fountains, an amphitheater, forum and private residences, in addition to diverse archaeological remains collected over decades throughout the region.
In the last millennium, the city was the epicenter for the Catholic religion, as it became a national archdiocese, and has (probably) the most beautiful Cathedral in Portugal. Adding to the religiosity and the unusual set of churches, the city has 2 sanctuaries in the highest part, which are undoubtedly the most pleasant places to visit in the region. At Bom Jesus, you can admire the 581 steps that are part of the UNESCO world heritage (2019), and stroll through the viewpoints and attractions. And at Sameiro you will be dazzled by the 360º view over the entire region.
Guimarães, by it's turn, is the cradle of nationality. It was the battleground of our independence from the kingdom of León and Castile, and the birthplace of Afonso Henriques (our first king). It is an enchanted city that maintains the original medieval structure and architectural features that earned the distinction as a cultural world heritage site by UNESCO (2001). The Medieval Castle from the 10th century and the church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira dating from the same period are two ex-libris of the city that deserve our visit and special attention. Also mandatory is a walk through the narrow streets and main squares and then climb the Penha Mountain -the highest point at around 40km-, from where you'll have a fantastic view of the city and even a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean!

Book it! Ricardo is an excellent tour guide. He made us feel right at home. He was very flexible in changing things to meet our needs. Would definitely book Portugal Autentico again because of Ricardo.
