Braga is the district capital in the Minho region with a total area of 183km2 and around 200,000 inhabitants. It is a very heterogeneous city carrying in its legacy and history several cultural influences that lead to the present Best European Destination (2021). Dissecting a little its genesis:
The city of Archbishops: Primate Archbishop of Braga, is the title awarded to the Prelate of Braga as this is the oldest Diocese in the Iberian Peninsula, dating back to 45 AD. The Cathedral of Braga went from Diocese to Archdiocese, having later received the Primatial title. The Archbishop of Braga held, since the foundation of Portugal, precedence over all Bishops of Portugal.
Portuguese Rome: Braga has the highest number of religious buildings per square meter in Portugal! That's why it's called Western/Portuguese Rome. They form a total of: 82 churches, 76 chapels, 2 sanctuaries and 1 cathedral.
The Roman city: Between the years 15 and 13 BC. The city of Bracara Augusta was founded by Emperor Augustus (27 BC - 14 AD), to promote and spread Roman culture in the numerous nearby towns. The bimillennial legacy is still very present and portrayed in various parts of the city. Ruins of a spa, spa, fountain, dwellings and numerous artifacts are visible.
The Baroque city: During the 18th century, a process of capitalization and renovation of space and buildings began with the aim of proving the status of the city. The architect André Soares was one of the great workers of this Baroque movement, which has shaped the appearance of the city to this day.
Heart of Minho: Due to its location. The city is closely linked to all of Minho: to the north is the traditional Alto Minho, to the east the Peneda-Gerês National Park, to the south the manor lands of Basto and the industrial Ave and to the west the Minhoto maritime coast.
City of Youth: Despite being the oldest city in Portugal (over 2000 years old) it is simultaneously a city filled with many young people and a young spirit (in large part due to the presence of several universities, with emphasis on the largest campus in Portugal belonging to the Minho's university). It is estimated that around 40% of the population is aged below 30 years. It should also be noted that in 2012 it was named - European Youth Capital.
