Guimarães Medieval - Half Day

Description:

Fall in love with one of the most impressive cities in the northern region. Guimarães is proudly the cradle of nationality, since in the distant twelfth century, here we gained independence from the kingdom of León, having been established as the capital of the Portucalense County. Since then, the city has maintained its defensive walls, castle, burgh and workers/peasants quarters until the 19th century. Today, we can still marvel at its medieval genesis, with the small squares and narrow streets, in addition to admiring the great monuments and cultural legacy present in every corner of the city.

The historic area of the city (walled perimeter, 3 km long) is a Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO (2001), and proudly displays the original architectural features in an evolution towards a modern city, with the rich building typology showing the development of Portuguese architecture between the 15th and 19th centuries with the continued use of traditional building techniques and materials. There are countless mentions, details, traces dating from the Middle Ages throughout the city. And no less interesting are the 11 churches and several altars present in the small historic center, which today continue to serve the city's faithful.
On this visit we'll explore the entire area within the walls touching the points of interest and curiosities, to culminate in a detailed visit to the two most emblematic monuments of Guimarães - Castle (10th century) and Palace of the Dukes of Bragança (15th century).
